Quick prison news round-up for the last few months (UK & Ireland)

6th Sept, Lincoln, UK: A riot erupted in an Immigration Removal Centre near Lincoln after a Bengali man, who had been in the prison only three days, died on September 5. A ‘Tornado’ team, or ‘national tactical response group’, was called into the prison to quell the riot, which lasted all day.

3rd August, Nottingham, UK: Prison officer had part of his ear bitten off in a ‘gruesome Mike Tyson style attack’ during an attack at HMP Nottingham.

28th July, Nottingham, UK:
A prisoner gouges out his eyes in protest against the sweltering heat in his cell at HMP Nottingham.

26th July, Nottinghamshire, UK: 120 prisoners took control of the whole of C wing in a serious riot at HMP Ranby to protest against some of the worst prison conditions in the UK.

12th July, Suffolk, UK: A prisoner at a prison in Suffolk has been given a further jail sentence for assaulting a guard with a towel containing human shit. The prisoner pushed it in the warder’s face at HMP Highpoint while other prisoners laughed. The judge said it was a premeditated act that caused “gratuitous degradation” of the officer, who had taken several weeks off work as a result.

1st July, UK: Plans are announced for the ‘HMP Prison Service Reserve’, this is to cope with an unexpected sudden rise of prisoners and to help with quelling disturbances and uprisings.

28th June, Dublin, Ireland:
There was a foiled attempt to smuggle drugs into Wheatfield prison using a quadcopter. It hit a security wire and crashed- sparking a minor incident.
